Environment Health and Safety Policy

ARUSi will protect workers, learners, riders, drivers, children, communities and the environment in every training, travel and field activity. No programme target justifies unsafe work or avoidable environmental harm.

1. Scope

This policy applies at ARUSi workplaces, training grounds, public roads, schools, community sites, partner locations and events, and during work-related travel. It covers employees, instructors, learners, volunteers, contractors, suppliers and visitors under ARUSi's control or influence.

2. Safety and health commitments

ARUSi will identify hazards and assess risks before work begins and whenever conditions change. Controls will follow the practical hierarchy of eliminating hazards where possible, then using safer methods, physical controls, administrative rules and suitable personal protective equipment.
Training vehicles and motorcycles must be roadworthy, legally compliant and checked before use. Riders and drivers must be appropriately licensed or supervised for the activity, obey lawful instructions, use seat belts and suitable helmets, and never operate while impaired, dangerously fatigued or distracted.
Practical instruction will use suitable routes, learner-to-instructor controls, weather and traffic assessments, emergency contacts and clear stop-work criteria. Field teams working near live traffic will plan safe access, visibility, separation, traffic control and communication with the relevant road or public authority.
ARUSi will provide suitable induction, supervision, first-aid arrangements, welfare facilities and emergency procedures. Incidents, injuries, near misses, unsafe conditions and occupational illness concerns must be reported promptly. ARUSi will investigate proportionately and implement corrective action.
Children and other vulnerable participants require age-appropriate instructions, safe supervision and safeguarding controls. Emergency support takes priority over evidence collection or programme schedules.

3. Environmental commitments

ARUSi will comply with applicable environmental approvals and controls and will prevent pollution where reasonably practicable. Activities will manage waste, spills, noise, dust, fuel, oils, batteries, tyres and damaged equipment responsibly.
We will reduce unnecessary fuel, energy, water, paper and material use; favour durable and repairable equipment where suitable; plan travel efficiently; and use licensed or otherwise lawful waste handlers where required.
Road-sign, road-asset and school-zone work will protect drainage, vegetation, public access and surrounding communities. No installation or alteration will proceed without the permission required from the responsible authority or landholder.
Environmental and climate considerations will be included in programme design and procurement in proportion to the activity's impacts and available alternatives.

4. Consultation and accountability

Workers and delivery partners may raise hazards and stop work where they reasonably believe there is serious and imminent danger, without retaliation for a good-faith report. Management will consult affected people, keep legally required records, monitor performance and review controls after incidents or material change. Contractors must meet ARUSi's EHS requirements and report incidents involving ARUSi work immediately.

5. Reporting

Emergencies must first be reported through the local emergency procedure and to the appropriate public authority where required. Non-emergency concerns may be sent to legal@arusi.ke or raised with the responsible instructor, supervisor or programme lead.

6. Applicable Kenyan Law

This policy is governed by the laws of the Republic of Kenya and will be interpreted consistently with all mandatory legal and regulatory requirements that apply to ARUSi. Relevant references include:

If this policy conflicts with a mandatory legal requirement, that requirement will prevail and ARUSi will update the policy as necessary.
